Installation of Overvoltage Protection Products

A multi-stage protection approach to DIN-IEC norms is planned against instantaneous overvoltage. According to this approach, each stage reduces the impulse voltage to an extent, and makes it harmless for the system at the last stage. Type 1 (class B), Type 2 (class C), and Type 3 (class C) protection modules are used for light protection, medium level, and sensitive protection, respectively. For instance, 50% of the overvoltage generated by a lightning strike on a building flows into the ground through external the lightning conductor system, while the remaining 50% (about 100kA) flows to the weakest resistance point in the building. In such a case, if an overvoltage protector is used in low resistance points, this value is gradually reduced and absorbed in each protection unit, preventing damage to electronic devices.
