INTERNAL LIGHTNING SYSTEMS

The Importance of Internal Lightning Systems

A maximum 50% of a lightning strike that hits an external lightning system is absorbed by the ground, and the remaining part is led to the systems inside the construction due to inductive-capacitive coupling and potential differences. Even lightning that strikes 2km away from a construction has the potential to create the same effect.

Leading to material damage and losses in electric-electronic systems and devices, this situation poses a serious risk when combined with network-induced short term impacts, harmonics, voltage rises and drops. The need to use internal lightning systems (surge arresters) has arisen in constructions and installations due to improved engineering understanding and relevant standards.
